Poco F4 5G review

The Poco F4 5G reminded us a lot of the Poco F1 a few years ago. While its design may not be revolutionary in appearance, its build quality and in-hand feel are excellent for DH1,499 price tags, such as Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection and IP53 dust and splash resistance. On the front, the smartphone has a 6.67-inch 1,080 x 2,400 resolution AMOLED panel that is suitable for wide multimedia usage and fast multitasking for its 120Hz refresh rate. It appreciates the Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 5G chip, which is at the heart of the Poco F4 5G. With 6GB RAM, the smartphone is suitable for social media browsing, work and gaming. But it may take some time to adapt to some of the quirks that come with MIUI 13 on Android 12.

While the software is a minor flaw, the triple-camera setup poses some big challenges. It does well in good light and creates vivid images, but the smartphone can’t draw the line between punchy and extra saturated. But for videos, the Poco F4 5G is reliable with good focus tracking and quality.

Throughout the day, the Poco F4 5G will rarely remind you of its battery life. Because on that front, it’s impressive. The 4,500mAh cell is capable of lasting 2 days on a single charge with moderate usage with both WiFi and 5G. Recharging is also a treat, thanks to the 67W charging brick that gets fully charged in about an hour with the smartphone.

For a combination of performance, multimedia consumption and reliable battery life, the Poco F4 5G is a good choice. Its camera may not be perfect, but it is a fair sacrifice that other categories of Poco smartphones have been able to offer, especially at this incredibly competitive price.

Poco F4 5G Design

While the Poco F4 5G is far from a unique design, it admits no significant sacrifices with the build quality. The front and back of it are made with Corning Gorilla Glass 5, and the smartphone in hand feels premium. It weighs 195 grams and is made of a slim 7.7mm profile for easy one-handed use. Especially in emergencies, the added IP53 dust and splash resistance is also a great fallback.

There are other aspects of smartphone design that we like. For example, it supports dual-SIM, has an IR blaster and has an extremely well-placed and responsive side-mounted fingerprint scanner. It is a relatively budget smartphone, with the exception of a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Display

Poco F4 5G  Display

On the front, the Poco F4 5G has a flat 6.67-inch AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10 + support and a maximum of 1,300 net brightness. It’s safe to say that the display is excellent for price tags, providing some unparalleled multimedia usage experience, especially thanks to Dolby Vision support and stereo speakers. When watching videos or movies in deep black or vibrant colours, the panel rarely gets frustrated.

We’ve used the smartphone in a variety of situations, such as under direct sunlight for reading or at home to watch videos. And not once did we feel like we were using a budget display. The 20: 9 aspect ratio of 1,080 x 2,400 resolution offers the perfect hybrid in design and quality, but the praise doesn’t stop there.

With its high refresh rate, the Poco F4 5G display provides a satisfactory user experience. The elements in the display feel smooth, responsive and chic. We didn’t have to take a single break to grab the smartphone, which we usually associate with flagship smartphones. However, recreating this experience at this price tag for Poco mon is incredibly impressive.

Poco F4 5G Camera

The Poco F4 comes with 5G optical image stabilization (OIS), an 8MP ultra-wide sensor, and a 64MP primary camera with a 2MP macro camera. In ideal light, the primary sensor is capable of taking punchy pictures. This is great if you want to differentiate your photos on social media, but it can also have an adverse effect. For example, overly vibrant colours can lead to detailed damage, and sometimes the colours can be slanted. With ultra-wide lenses, you won't get the same experience. The pictures can be pretty grainy, and the edges are soft.

This trend is the same for early night cameras. We don't think the smartphone is equipped for night pictures, but with patience and enough light, you can reproduce usable night pictures using night mode. As for the video, you can shoot for 4K 60fps, and the results are decent. If you find yourself in a situation like shooting a video, I would feel comfortable doing it with the Poco F4 5G.

Unlike smartphones, you'll get a 20MP selfie camera. Although the overall pictures it takes are sharp, the selfies come out with a lot of processing. The skin tone captured by the camera is off, and the background blur and dynamic range are not particularly good when using portrait mode.

Poco F4 5G Performance

The performance of the Poco F4 5G goes hand in hand with its display. Inside, the smartphone boasts a Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 5G chip, which we believe strikes the perfect sweet spot between flagship performance and battery life. This chip comes with 6GB RAM and 128GB of non-expandable storage.

We are fascinated by how much a smartphone can multitask without sweating. Pushing it to its limits with on-demand applications or browsing through various social media applications, the experience is smooth. Even when it comes to overlaying running applications like Google Maps, the Poco F4 5G handles it like a champion. However, in this case, we noticed a slight annoyance. Whenever we get a phone call while working on navigation, the smartphone loses signal. Some people say that this is normal, but we have a smartphone that has GPS working even when connected to a call, so this is a minor inconvenience.

In addition to regular use, we have dipped our toes in some gaming. Given the high-end chip, it was not surprising to see Poco F4 5G Blitz through games like PUBG: Mobile, Apex Legends Mobile or Call of Duty: Mobile. And to be honest, we hoped it would go well. However, what surprised us even more, was that the phone didn't heat up much, and there was no change in performance even after a long 45-minute gaming session.

Poco F4 5G Software

One aspect of the Poco F4 5G that we will change is its software. When it runs Android 12, it's a heavily skinned version dropped with MIUI 13. This software skin is not a cup of tea for everyone, and it instinctively carries a lot of bloatware.

Fortunately, most pre-installed applications can be uninstalled on a smartphone and do not affect the day-to-day operation of the device. Over the years, we've heard claims of pushing unwanted ads to MIUI users, but that's something we didn't encounter during our review.

There is no denying that MIUI 13 is a highly customizable Android skin, but it comes with aggressive background app controls and a very bloated feeling. Poko has the opportunity to create an OS skin for itself here, and it doesn't seem to be using the same.

Poco F4 5G Battery

Inside, the Poco F4 5G boasts a 4,500mAh cell with some of the most reliable battery performance. The smartphone can easily last two days with moderate use on a single charge.

Even if you push the smartphone to its limits, you'll still be able to get a full day's worth of battery life, which can be anywhere from 10-12 hours of screen time. This is incredibly impressive because we used the Poco F4 5G with the launch of 5G data.

With the rare chance of running out of smartphone battery, it can easily be topped up with a 67W charging brick. You see a 50 per cent charge in approximately 30 minutes and a full charge near the hour mark.
